How to store your kitchen knife

Storing a special kitchen knife properly is key to maintaining its sharpness, longevity, and overall condition. Here are the best storage options:

1. Knife Magnet (Wall or Countertop Strip)

• Ideal if you want easy access while keeping the blade edge safe.

• Prevents contact with other knives or utensils, reducing dulling.

• Works well for both carbon steel and stainless steel knives, but carbon steel knives should be dried thoroughly before placing them on the magnet to avoid moisture buildup.

2. Saya (Wooden Sheath or leather sheath)

• Great for protecting the blade, especially for high-end or handmade knives.

• Prevents accidental damage and keeps the edge sharp.

• Best if you need to store knives in a drawer or travel with them.

3. Knife Block (option but I dont reccomend it)

• Keeps knives safe and organized.

• Choose a block that does not have overly tight slots to avoid unnecessary blade wear.

• Ensure the block is kept in a dry environment to prevent moisture buildup.

4. In-Drawer Knife Organizer

• Good if you prefer a clutter-free countertop.

• Protects blades from knocking against other utensils.

• Make sure the knives rest securely to prevent dulling.

5. Blade Guards

• A cost-effective alternative to sayas for drawer storage or travel.

• Helps prevent damage to the blade and accidental cuts when reaching into a drawer.

Additional Tips for Carbon Steel Knives

• Always dry immediately after washing to prevent rust.

• Lightly oil the blade (food-safe mineral oil or camellia oil) if storing for a long period.

• Store in a dry place, away from humidity and extreme temperature changes.

Which method you choose depends on your space, usage, and how often you reach for your knife, but keeping it protected is essential!

I recommend knife magnet. Its easy accesible, clean and does not harm your blade and knife overall.
